Habitat:

Limestone and chalk outcrops, dolomite outcrops, glades, sandy or blackland prairies, upland hardwood or mixed hardwood-pine forests in dry, clay soils. This is the most common species in the eastern United States but has traditionally been considered conspecific with O. humifusa.
